Artist Research

Artist 1 - Lindsey Mendick 

Lindsey Mendick is a female British artist based in Margate, Kent. Her practice primarily lies in installation and ceramics, through which she can express her thoughts and experiences. Mendick's work is confessional and thought-provoking as she touches upon topics which are uncomfortable, or outside of social norms.

Artist 2 - Tracey Emin

Dame Tracey Emin is a female British artist based in Margate, Kent. As a confessional artist, Emin's work details emotional periods and events throughout her life. Often using her work to spark conversations about "closed-door" topics such as abortions, sex, mental health, alcohol misuse and others.




 
"Everyone I've Ever Slept With (1963–1995)"  (1995):
A blue tent which the inside of is covered in fabric squares with letters on, spelling out the names of those she had shared a bed with, either platonically, romantically, or sexually.



 
"I do not expect"  (2002):
A patchwork blanket piece made from various handmade fabric squares with lettering sewn onto the top. Emin describes this work as the reality of great female artists, factually commenting that she will die alone as she does not have any children to be with for when that time comes.



 
Artist 3 - Phillip Guston

Phillip Guston, a Jewish Canadian-American painter and printmaker, was most known for his abstract works which he almost exclusively used of pink. Interestingly, it has been said Guston used pink as a way of making his 'political' art more appealing. A large portion of his practice was informed by observing the destruction of the Nazi's in World War 2 as well as the rise of the Ku Klux Klan.





 
"Monument"  (1976):
A abstract painting featuring a mound of entangled legs, painted in various shades of pink and red. The meaning behind which has never been revealed. However, some understand it as a tribute to his late brother, who succumbed to his injuries after his legs contracted gangrene from a car accident.



 
"Painting, Smoking, Eating"  (1973):
A abstract painting featuring a pink-faced character smoking in bed with a plate of food. A pile of shoes looms in the background.



 
Artist 4 - Annette Messager 

Annette Messager is a French visual artist who is most known for her works of installation. Throughout her lifetime, her work has made reference to themes of childhood, love, memory, and death.





 
"Penetration"  (1994):
An installation of hand-sewn anatomical organs suspended from the ceiling.



 
Artist 5 - Mike Kelley 

Mike Kelley, a contemporary artist from Michigan, USA, was most known for his performances, sculptures, and installations using found objects. 






 
"Deodorized Central Mass with Satellites"  (1991-1999):
Various large, masses of children's colourful plush toys suspended from the ceiling.
